Learn More about the farm

Our Farm

In 1994, Leafland Farm was established by Everd and Marie Strauss in North Taieri, Otago, in the hills surrounding Mosgiel outside Dunedin. Everd’s aim was and still is to breed and raise Simmental Bulls using only the best genetic traits – Breeding every bull for a low birth weight, rapid mass gain, gentle nature and large adult muscle mass. Today, Leafland Farm is still owned by the Strauss family but the herd has continued to grow, and Everd and Marie still reside on the farm overseeing the direction of the breeding.

Simmental Bulls that changed the direction of the family

Sires such as Kilimonjaro and XXX have been crucial in the establishment of the Leafland stud, as has the usage of homebred bulls such as YYY, ZZZ, and AAA, all of which were bred from bloodlines selected by Dr. Strauss for their gentle demeanour, low birth weight, and quick growth. They calved easily and had a far shorter gestation time than our previous sires.

The Leafland Farm annual bull sale – our yearly celebration of the breed.

Every year around Mid May –  3rd or 4th Wednesday of May. Leafland holds its annual bull sale, this gives local farmers and invited guests an opportunity to view or own bulls that would go up to the national sales. As the sales are held in the lower half of the South Island of New Zealand, and incidentally at the start of winter, a warm slice of beef on a fresh roll is welcomed.

Are Simmental cattle gentle?

Everd aims to be a farmer that breeds gentle nature as a top priority, a ‘beast that cannot be handled is a danger to the farmer, and therefore a danger to itself. A beast that hurts itself, it’s farmer, or other animals is more likely to go to the works – this is not good on either end of the scale’

Are simmentals polled or horned?

The breed is naturally horned although Leafland are producing polled purebred simmentals as a horned animal can and often does injure farmers when being weighed or medicated.

What is the History of the Simmental?

The History of  Simmental cattle date all the way back to the Middle Ages.
Simmental cattle are believed to be the product of a mix between big German cattle and a smaller Swiss breeds.
Simmental derives its name from the Simme Valley in Switzerland’s Berner Oberland, where the cattle were initially raised.
Technically, the Simmental classification encompasses a number of European breeds.
In Switzerland, the breed is referred to particularly as Fleckvieh; in Germany and Austria, it is referred to as Fleckvieh; and in France, it is referred to as Pie Rouge.
Since the breed’s inception in Switzerland, it has spread to all six continents.
Simmental cattle are believed to number between 40 and 60 million globally, with more than half residing in Europe.
Initially, selection in Europe was based on three characteristics: milk production, meat production, and use as draught animals.
While the need for working animals has decreased significantly in recent years, Simmental’s muscularity and high milk production remain critical to its success.

What is a purebred Simmental?

Characteristics Simmental coloration ranges from gold to red with white and may be uniform or sharply delineated in patches on a white backdrop.
Generations of selective breeding with the goal of increasing milk and beef production at the lowest possible cost have resulted in the development of a balanced hereditary proponent that is extremely adaptive, powerfully muscled, beautifully lined, and well conformed.
Other breed features include docility and maternal instincts.
The breed is adaptable to a wide variety of environments, from rural smallholders to large-scale ranching operations.
Farmers continue to breed simmentals for their excellent meat outputs all over the world.
The heavy muscling, length, and general size and weight of the animal are coupled to produce a well fleshed carcass of substantial red meat with a minimum of waste fat in breeding, although it permits variances in focus from mothering ability to beefing traits.
The Simmental has proven to be quite successful in crossbreeding.
It gives its crossbred offspring good growth, a huge frame, and hence a higher meat production.
It increases the meat’s quality by adding white fat and good marbling.
It increases milk supply, leading in excellent calves growth in suckler herds.

How do you identify a Simmental?

Simmentals range in colour from yellowish brown to straw to dark red, with white markings on the head, brisket, belly, and legs. They frequently exhibit red pigmentation around their eyes, as well as white spots on their bodies, particularly behind the shoulders and on the flanks.

How much do Simmental cattle cost?

The cost of a Simmental Sire is set by the market, the characteristics of the Sire and its lineage as well as the current cost of feed, beef and the economical aspects of farming as a whole.

There is no accurate average cost as an exceptional beast from simmental studs like Leafland Farm can fetch a premium, but this in turn saves the farmer money in the long run as more stock will be birthed with less issue, and the stock will rapidly grow into magnificent beasts if given care and attention.

What is the average weight of a Simmental bull?

Simmental bulls produced offspring with a 6kg higher average weaning weight and a 20kg higher yearling weight. Simmental yearling weights were from 310kg to 340kg, compared to 285kg-315kg for Angus and 280kg-310kg for Hereford.

What this means is that the Mature Simmental Bull comes in at an average weight that ranges between 1091 to 1273 kilograms (altitude and feeding, and the season play a role in this fluctuation) A great example would be born on the lower end of the scale and mature into the upper end of the adult scale.

What breed came from African and Simmentaler?

    • The Simmentaler Breeders’ Society of Southern Africa changed its constitution in the 1980s to include the Simbra because of the exceptional performance of crossbred Simmental and Brahmans. In 1986, the first F1s (bull Nestau 851 and heifer Lichtenstein L135 – both ¾ x ¼) were registered.
    • The Southern Africa Simmentaler/Simbra Breeders’ Society was the first to use the intercalving time (ICP) as a criteria in assessing cows in the mid-1970s. In the 1980s, the Simdex (SIMmentaler reproduction inDEX) value was created as a result of this. The age of the last calving, the number of calvings, the intercalving duration, and, if appropriate, the number of embryo flushings are all combined into a single Simdex figure. Simbradex is a term that refers to the Simbra breed.
    • The future of cattle breeding, according to Kobus Bester, current chairman of the Simmentaler/Simbra Breeders’ Society of Southern Africa SA, is dependent on the application of precision agricultural methods, which include the use of modern technology to maximise the contribution of each animal. This will entail the use of phenotypically well-adapted and balanced cattle, which will determine the Simmentaler’s future.

Are simmentals polled or horned?

The breed is naturally horned although Leafland are producing polled purebred simmentals as a horned animal can and often does injure farmers when being weighed or medicated.

How do you identify a Simmental?
